Reflecting on Core Values: Balance

At Jovian Concepts, our Core Values speak to what others seek in Jovian Concepts and what our employees seek in each other, in company leadership, and in themselves. Balance is one of our five Core Values: Professionalism, Loyalty, Balance, Cohesiveness, and Personal Growth.

How do we know Balance is a Core Value?

Balance can mean many different things in a company: it applies to the ways decisions are made, the ability to explore a variety of options, and also the healthy distribution between where company members place their attention. At Jovian Concepts, Balance applies to all of the above. From the input leadership appreciates from multiple sources, to the focus equally placed on customer service and company culture, Balance is a Core Value of Jovian Concepts.

When asked what they value most about Jovian Concepts, employees react in the following ways:

Such phrases demonstrate the staying power of Balance in the Jovian Concepts culture. When creating the Mission Statement, the brainstorming session left “flexibility”, “dynamic”, and “agile” on the short list of words considered most appropriate to describe Jovian Concepts and its employees. This Core Value has been part of Jovian Concepts since our company started.

What does Balance look like?

Balance is present in the Jovian Concepts approach to prioritizing, but also in the approach to planning the activities that build our culture. The annual team building retreat alternates between the type of location, appealing eventually to every preference -- whether it's the beach or the mountains, loud and busy or quiet and laid-back. Similarly, activities closer to home offer variety of timing, pace, and inclusion, from family game nights and activities with pets to happy hours and community outreach.

In company policies, the opportunity for communication demonstrates the balance between leadership, with many voices making for strong decisions. The company leave policy offers employees the freedom to balance work responsibilities and ambitions with the outside passions and obligations of a healthy and realistic lifestyle.

President and CEO, Richard Scheper, says of this Core Value, “People who value work/life balance have a certain wisdom.” We are proud to have been recognized by the Baltimore Sun Media Group with a special 2017 award for Work/Life Balance, and we admire the employees of Jovian Concepts for holding Balance in high regard as one of our five Core Values.
