A Day in the Life of our CEO

Get a glimpse at a typical day in the life of our top boss here at Jovian Concepts.

This is part of a series of posts highlighting the diversity of our Jovian Concepts team. Check back throughout the year to glimpse snapshots of other members, or search our site for more.

Richard Scheper, Ph.D., lives and breathes Jovian Concepts, Inc., the company he founded in 2009. A typical day for him touches on each of the Core Values he shares with the company: Balance, Loyalty, Cohesion, Professionalism, and Personal Growth. Communication is key to Rich's day, with channels open to text, phone, email, and meet in person in order to stay current, address concerns, plan, reflect, and build relationships.

Take a look at the day Rich shared with us recently.

5:30 a.m. Wake up and catch up-- watch the local news on TV, read national news online, go through all of the emails that came in overnight, and drink coffee (lots of it!).

7:00 a.m. Jog seven miles around the neighborhood. This can be hard to do while on travel, but most places allow this every-other-day routine to stick.

9:00 a.m. Arrive at the office in Columbia, MD. Catch up on emails. Touch base with our office staff.

10:00 a.m. Meet with another group of companies in our industry for a storyboarding session. [Storyboarding involves planning the message a proposal will communicate.]

11:30 a.m. Attend the Weekly Senior VP Sync lunch. This lunch allows time to talk with Heather Johnson about personnel, business development, and operations. Ongoing texts and emails with Heather work well, too, but this face-to-face conversation is critical to learning from her.

1:00 p.m. Attend the Weekly Activity Report (WAR) meeting with Jovian Concepts leadership to discuss the status of all the programs our employees support. As with the Senior VP Sync, a weekly WAR meeting is crucial to awareness, communication, and growth.

2:00 p.m. Catch up on emails and phone messages.

2:30 p.m. Plan for an upcoming All Hands meeting. Holding All Hands meetings each quarter is a great way to get face time with employees to learn from them, share information about the health of the company, and discuss the path forward. It's important to balance reflecting and planning, and doing that with employee input is part of our corporate culture.

3:00 p.m. Meet a program manager for one of the programs our employees support.

4:00 p.m. Attend a local networking event held by a company in our industry. This particular event also features some awards given to the employees we have on the program lead by the host company, so it is a pleasure to be there to cheer them on.

5:30 p.m. Check in with a status update posted by another program our employees support.

6:00 p.m. Catch up on emails and phone messages in the car before heading to the next event.

6:30 p.m. Attend a networking event held by a local company in our industry. These networking events aid business development, build relationships within our community, and help keep Jovian Concepts current. Meeting people adds a personal touch to ongoing communications.

7:45 p.m. Arrive at home. Catch up with Stacey about family happenings and some potential community outreach opportunities she's exploring for Jovian Concepts.

8:00 p.m. Check on the honeybees. A hive recently swarmed and it's important to monitor the newly captured swarm to be sure they are taking to their new hive.

8:15 p.m. Check on the vegetable plants before daylight is gone. Make sure the chickens are locked in for the night.

8:45 p.m. Take out the trash. Nobody else in the house seems to want to do this.

9:00 p.m. Call mom.

9:30 p.m. Catch up on emails and phone calls.

10:00 p.m. Take a final look at the news.

10:15 p.m. Read a few pages of Einstein's Dice and Schrodinger's Cat by Paul Halpern. Trying to keep the physics skills alive with this book recommended by a good friend.

10:45 p.m. Lights out.
